Pete's 2005 Southland Pre-Season Schedule Previews
  1. Northwestern State: Coach Stoker's Demons has their sights set on defending the SLC title, and making NSU's sixth Division I-AA playoff appearance in nine seasons. However, it is very rare that a conference champion also has the conference's most challenging schedule. Although the schedule lacks that serious "big money" game ... 2 IA clubs, a good NDSU and Texas Southern club make this a very challenging slate. As with all of the Southland clubs, the addition of a promising SE Louisiana club adds more difficulty. In conference play, McNeese, Texas St., and Sam Houston are all away.

  2. McNeese State: It goes without saying that a 4-7 record is unacceptable at MSU. That is why it is almost impossible to find any 2004 results, news, and stats on the Cowboys web site. With that is mind, we will look at the 2005 schedule and what coach Tate will face in his quest for a quick turn-around in the Cowboys fortunes. The first three games of the season become progressively more difficult, as the Cowboys face a trio of "southerns". First comes Southern University, then Georgia Southern, followed by Southern Miss. Luckily Southern Utah, SFA, Sam Houston, and Northwestern State are at home.

  3. Nicholls State: Again in 2005, NSU fans will be treated to a triple-option attack. Coach Thomas first year was bitter-sweet. His Colonels finished 5-5 with three of their five wins coming against NCAA Division I-AA Top 25 opponents. However, after losing three of its final five games and finishing with a 2-3 Southland Conference record, Thomas and his staff now feel they have some unfinished business to take care of as they enter the 2005 season. The OOC portion of the Colonel's slate includes, Southern Utah, Western Carolina, NDSU, and Big-10 opponent Indiana. In conference, the games a very good mix.

  4. Sam Houston State: Todd Whitten takes over the Bearkats for the 2005 season. They will both be tested very quickly. After a DII opener, the Bearkats will face 2 IA clubs in Houston and Texas Tech. In a game that many will overlook, upstart Missouri State will bring an excellent record, against Southland foe, to town. The Bearkats conference games are split ... with NWU and SFA at home.

  5. SE Louisiana: The Lions return to Southland play in 2005. The OOC slate includes Jacksonville, Alcorn, Northern Colorado, and IA Tulane. The Southland slate could certainly be more favorable.

  6. Stephen F. Austin: The 'Jacks have one of the most diverse OOC schedules in the country. After a DII opener, coach McFarland's club will face Montana St., Western Illinois, Southern Utah, and UC-Davis. In addition, McNeese, Sam Houston, and Northwestern State will be road games.

  7. Texas State: There has been more than a name change in San Marcos. Despite the Bobcats being picked to finish last in the Southland Conference in 2004, Texas State average attendance for five home games was 11,164. This year, coach Bailiff looks to return his Alma Mater to the national spotlight. They certainly have the schedule to do it, with OOC matches that include Texas A&M. In addition, the fans will be treated to 7 home contests.
