Pete's 2006 Gateway Pre-Season Schedule Previews
  1. Indiana St.: Head coach Lou West will take his trees into on of the nations most difficult schedules in 2006. The non-conference slate includes IA's Northern Illinois and Purdue. In fact, the degree of difficulty in the schedule is greatly enhanced by the road schedule. ISU will face Purdue, Northern Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Southern Illinois, Youngstown St., Western Kentucky, and Western illinois ...all away from Terre Haute.

  2. Western Kentucky: It seems like you do not make the play-off in one season, and everyone forgets who you are. Well, just a reminder for GFC fans that WKU has been in the post-season every year but last ... but the Toppers have a tall schedule ahead for 2006. Western's OOC slate includes Georgia, Eastern Kentucky, Chattanooga, and Austin Peay. A very nice cross-section indeed, but GA and EKU are away. In GFC action, the Hilltoppers are balanced with ILS and YSU at home ...and UNI and SIU on-the-road.
  3. Illinois State: The Redbirds are looking for their first Gateway title since 1999, but a solid schedule awaits. Non-gateway games include at Kansas St., Central Ark., Eastern Illinois, and at Murray St.. GFC games are balanced with WKU and UNI away, and SIU and YSU at home.

  4. Youngstown State: Coming off of a losing season in 2004, coach Heacock guided his Penguins to a share of the conference crown in 2005. Thus expectations for 2006 are even higher, by both the media and the players. Despite a share of the GFC crow, YSU was not selected for the post-season. This schedule is interesting. Non-GFC games are very broad and include Penn State, UC-Davis, Maine, and the "Rock" (DII Slippery Rock). The conference portion is somewhat tough, as the Penguins travel to WKU and ILS ...home contests against SIU and UNI are a "must win".

  5. Missouri State: Perhaps the most exciting occurrence this season for the Bears (and all of the GFC) is the return of coach Terry Allen. Terry Allen began his coaching career at UNI, where his 76-25 record took him to Kansas (head-coach) and Iowa St. (coordinator). He is now back in the GFC at Missouri State, replacing the 'dean' of all Gateway coaches ...Randy Ball. His first schedule includes a very familiar Oklahoma St., Sam Houston, C. Arkansas, and a sub-IAA. Conference games are balanced (yet favorable) with YSU, WKU, SIU, and rival WIU all at home.

  6. Western Illinois: Another traditional power in the conference, looking to emerge, is Western Illinois. The Leathernecks schedule is somewhat favorable, but the road schedule is tough. The Necks will face Wisconsin, WKU, SIU, and UNI away from McComb. However, YSU and ILS will be at home.

  7. Southern Illinois: With all eyes on the Panthers and Redbirds in 2006, all the Salukis need to do is what they have been for the past few years ...winning ball games. This schedule is about as favorable as they come in the Gateway. Non-conference games include Indiana, Ark.-Pine Bluff, Southern Utah, and DII Lock-Haven. Conference play is balanced, with YSU and ILS on-the-road ... UNI and WKU at home.

  8. Northern Iowa: A schedule like this is one reason why so many predict the Panthers will be in the post-season once again in 2006. Of course the fact that they are a good team always helps. Non-Gateway games include Iowa St., SDSU, Drake, and North Dakota. The conference slate is well balanced.
