2006 MEAC Pre-Season Schedule Previews
|
- S. Carolina St.: The Bulldogs
have the most challenging schedule in the
MEAC for 2006. Non-conference games are with
Wofford, Coastal, and I-AA “newbie”
Winston-Salem. The conference slate is favorable
with Bethune-Cookman and Hampton at home.
- Florida A&M: The Rattlers
are finally seeing more traditional I-AA schedules,
after attempting a move to IA. Miami (FL),
TSU, and Winston-Salem. Conference games are
favorable with SCS and Hampton at home, and
Bethune-Cookman is at a neutral site.
- N. Carolina A&T: First-year
head football coach Lee Fobbs is looking to
return the Aggie's to a perennial power in
the Mid-East. This is even more difficult
as running back Brandon Sweeney will not play
football for the Aggie's in 2006 because of
a medical issue. The Aggie's non-conference
schedule includes La.- Lafayette, Elon, and
Winston-Salem. The conference slate is very
balanced with a home, away, and neutral over
the conference powers.
- Howard: The Bison began
2005 very strong, but faded as the season
progressed. This year’s team looks to
keep things going the entire season. Howard
will face Rutgers, Savannah State, and Winston-Salem
in non-conference action; while MEAC contests
see all conference powers on-the-road.
- Morgan State: The Bears
managed only two wins in 2005, and Coach Hill
does return some 37 letter-winners for 2006.
The opening game at Towson could prove interesting.
In addition, OOC games include Monmouth and
a sub-IAA.
- Bethune-Cookman: The Wildcats
could end up the surprise team of the MEAC
this year. With a good returning class that
includes 9 all-MEAC players, and a good schedule
as well. Southern, Savannah, and Winston-Salem
head the non-MEAC contests; but Hampton, SCS,
and FLAMU make the conference schedule more
difficult.
- Norfolk State: The Spartan’s
non-conference trio include Winston-Salem,
VMI (interesting game), and a sub-IAA. The
conference slate is not favorable, as all
three of the conference powers are road games.
- Hampton: The Pirates are
again the Mid-east favorites for 2006, and
this schedule could be part of the reason.
The opener against Grambling could be very
interesting, and is certainly one of the key
games this year. However, Winston-Salem and
DIII Central will be less challenging. The
conference slate is mixed with B-C at home
and SCS away.
- Delaware State: The Hornets
non-conference schedule has a very challenging
match with Northwestern St., St. Francis,
and Concord. The MEAC schedule is very well-balanced.
