Pete's 2006 OVC Pre-Season Schedule Previews
  1. Murray State: The Racers are looking to get back up to the top of the Ohio Valley in 2006; however, this schedule will make that a difficult task. The non-conference games are at Missouri and Indiana St., with a very challenging I-AA Illinois St. at home. The conference slate is balanced, but does not favor Murray State. EKU, JSU, and EIU are all road contests for the Racers.

  2. Tennessee-Tech: Tennessee-Tech looks to have some offensive fire-power this season, as scrimmages look solid. This is a good schedule to make a mark in the Ohio Valley. However, issue off the field could hurt this team. Head coach Mike Hennigan resigned over the summer, and has since has rescinded his resignation and will be granted a medical leave of absence. In his place is acting head-coach and offensive coordinator Doug Malone. The eagles have a very nice schedule in 2006. OOC contests are Chattanooga, Gardner-Web, and IA former rival MTSU. The home conference slate is favorable; with EKU, EIU, and JSU at home.

  3. Jacksonville State: The Gamecocks look to recapture the luster of their first two seasons in the OVC, with another conference crown. However, this year’s schedule is quite challenging and Clay Green and Co. look to be up to the challenge. Last season, JSU opened up strong, with a terrific contest with Furman …and will have a rematch in 2006. The next 4 games saw a slide in 2005, and a strong finish. This year, things are a bit more challenging as Mississippi St., Furman, EKU, and EIU are all contests away from Jacksonville.

  4. Eastern Kentucky: The Colonels have left no question about this year’s expectation …an OVC crown and the post-season. The non-conference portion of the EKU 2006 schedule includes Cincinnati, rival Western Kentucky, and Western Carolina. The home portion of the OVC slate is favorable, as JSU will see EIU and JSU at home this year.

  5. Eastern Illinois: After a couple of down seasons, the 2005 Panthers took the OVC crown, and the 2006 version have no intentions of giving it up. The schedule is challenging, but not impossible. EIU has two IA games this season … at Indiana and Hawaii. In addition, a tough game with anticipated GFC power Illinois St. is also a road contest. However, the home OVC schedule favors the Panthers.

  6. Tennessee State: “Don’t let the number fool you” …TSU has a very difficult schedule in 2006. SWAC powers Alabama A&M and Jackson State, MEAC power Florida A&M, and a re-tooled Vanderbilt feature the non-OVC games; while games with EIU, JSU, and EKU are on-the-road in conference action.

  7. Samford: The Bulldogs are another team the entered the OVC with a “bang”, and looks to regain that luster. Bill Gray had a very young team in 2005, with only ½-dozen seniors. This year’s club is much more experienced, and will face a good schedule. A nice IA “money-game” with GA-Tech; others with future conference football member Austin Peay, and a sub-IAA round off the non-conference action. The OVC slate is well balanced, but favorable, with both “Eastern’s” at home.

  8. Tennessee-Martin: Word out of summer camp is very positive, as Jason Simpson takes over at the helm for the Skyhawks. He has an excellent schedule to make a good first impression in 2006. After a tough opener at Ohio, the Hawks will face Gardner-Webb and sub-IAA Urbana. The conference slate is favorable, with JSU, EIU, and EKU at home.

  9. SE Missouri State: Head Coach Tony Samuel come to SeMS through Nebraska, and has five former Cornhuskers on his Red hawk staff. The Hawks will face IA Arkansas in 2006, along with future OVC football member Austin Peay, and a sub-IAA. Conference play is favorable.
