2006 Patriot Pre-Season Schedule Previews
|
- Lafayette: Looking to repeat
as conference champions, the Leopards have
the most challenging schedule in the Patriot
League for 2006. A three game stretch of Penn,
Princeton, Yale, and Harvard highlight a non-conference
slate that also includes an opener at Sacred
Heart. League play comes early, as week to
finds Lafayette traveling to Bucknell. Lehigh
an Colgate are split …home vs. away.
- Bucknell: Looking to improve
on 2005’s 1-10 record; unfortunately
the Bison have a more difficult schedule than
last season with which to do it. The 2006
OOC games include Duquesne, Cornell, and Penn
at home … along with Richmond and Marist
away. The conference slate is evenly split
…home vs. away.
- Holy-Cross: The last couple
of seasons have seen a “changing of
the guard” in the Patriot League. Once
again, the Crusaders have to be considered
a serious threat in the conference. Although
they have lost quite a few seniors on offense,
this is a good schedule to keep Holy-Cross
competitive. Non-conference games include
Northeastern, Brown, Dartmouth, and Marist
…along with a difficult game at Harvard.
The Crusaders will be home for Lehigh, but
traveling for Colgate and Lafayette.
- Lehigh: One of the main
reasons Pete’s has selected Lehigh to
capture the Patriot crown in 2006, is the
schedule. The non-conference action sees both
Harvard and Princeton at home, while Yale
is away. There is an opening game against
Albany. There is also a contest at Villanova,
and the final game against the Leopards that
should determine the Engineers entire season.
Villanova will be much improved in 2006, and
Lafayette has no intentions of giving up that
conference trophy. Rivals Colgate and Fordham
are both at home this year for the Hawks.
- Colgate: As with the Mountain
Hawks, Colgate’s schedule strength can
be quite deceiving. The main reason for this
is the non-conference matches. This opener
at UMass will be a great game, and go a long
way in determining the Raiders post-season
fate. Dartmouth and Monmouth should be hurdles
they can jump over … although there
are indications that Princeton could have
a solid team this year, but this is a home
game for Colgate. The raiders will have Lafayette
at home, and Lehigh on the road.
- Georgetown: New head-coach
Kevin Kelly hopes to take Hoya football program
where it has not been since they joined the
Patriot League …competitive. This schedule
certain provides him with a venue to post
some first-year success. The Hoya's will travel
to Brown, Columbia, and Charleston Southern;
and home games with Stony Brook and Marist.
Conference play includes home bouts with Bucknell
and a season-opener at home against Holy Cross.
- Fordham: Fordham hopes
this will be the year to return them to dominance
in the Patriot League. If so, this is the
schedule do it with. Four of the Rams five
non-conference games are against non-scholarship
clubs, the remaining OOC contest is with Columbia.
There should be some serious concerns about
allowing a team, with a schedule like this,
into the post-season with an at-large berth.
Solution … win the conference.
