Pete's 2006 Southland Pre-Season Schedule Previews
  1. Northwestern St.: Northwestern State faces one of the nation’s most daunting schedules with a very young team. However, the Demons are confident they can extend a stretch of six straight winning seasons and compete for the Southland Conference football title in 2006. Northwestern has only seven seniors heading into a season where the Demons will play three BCS clubs. The IA games include visits to Kansas (Sept. 2) and Baylor (Sept. 9) and later will visit Ole Miss (Nov. 4). As with most of the Southland in 2006, there are practically no OOC I-AA games for anyone tell just how good these clubs are; and people still wonder why Pete's is against I-AA vs. BCS games. The conference slate is balanced in number and has Texas St. and McNeese at home. The Demon's entire non-conference slate (not IA's) includes Delaware St. from the MEAC (which should be a very solid club, but not SLC caliber) and a DII.

  2. SE. Louisiana: Not to be left out of the money, the Lions schedule includes three IA games, with a single OOC game against a scholarship I-AA program. Coach Roland's club will play at New Mexico St., SMU, and Texas Tech in 2006. Meanwhile, the entire non-conference I-AA slate includes Gardner-Webb of the Big South, and non-scholarship Jacksonville. The conference portion of the schedule is heavy as the Lions travel for matches versus McNeese, Texas St., and Nicholls St..

  3. Sam Houston St.: Todd Whitten returns not only 49 letterman in 2006, but a more seasoned staff as well. The Bearkats will face two powerful IA opponents in SMU and last year's BCS champions ...Texas. In addition, the OOC portion of the slate includes the future Southland member Central Arkansas, a very interesting match-up with the Gateway's Missouri St., and what will become a very common opponent to Southland teams ... DII Arkansas-Monticello. The conference portion of the Bearkats' slate is favorable, with Nicholls, McNeese, and Texas St. at home.

  4. Stephen F. Austin: Continuing on in a list that has yet to have a team not playing multiple IA contests, we find SFA is no different. Coach Robert McFarland enters his second season facing Tulsa and Arizona. The non-conference slate is rounded out by Central Arkansas, and what should be a very nice contest with N. Dakota St. In conference action, the schedule is balanced, with Texas St. and Nicholls away ... and Northwestern St. and McNeese at home.

  5. McNeese St.: Coach Tate looks to return his club to prominence in 2006, and has a balanced schedule to help. There are two IA clubs, with the balance of a DII, Southern Utah, and S. Dakota St.. In Southland play, the Cowboys are even at 3 each ... home vs. away. However, they have Texas St. and Nicholls at home.

  6. Nicholls St.: The Colonels look to defend their SLC championship with two IA games, and a pair of sub-IAA games. The IA games include traditional power Nebraska, and interesting contest with LA Tech. There is also a I-AA non-conference game with SDSU. The conference portion of the 2006 slate is balanced.

  7. Texas State: Although ranked seventh in the conference, the Bobcats really have the only schedule that resembles a IA schedule; as they are the only club in the conference playing only a single IA game. Beside a nice contest with Kentucky ... Texas St. will also face Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, and Texas Southern in I-AA action. A DII and very well-balanced conference schedule compliment this schedule.
