2007 Colonial Athletic Pre-Season Schedule Previews
|
- William & Mary: The
top three schedules in the Colonial Athletic
are very close. However, the Tribe edge out
the others. The main reason for this is the
fact that they face all of the top teams in
the CAA, an improved Flames club out of Liberty,
and have a date with in-state IA VA Tech.
- Villanova: The Wildcats
and Huskies are all but tied for the number-2
spot. I personally think the Wildcats have
the most challenging schedule in the conference.
In fact, if it was not for having the Tribe
on this schedule, it may well be the most
difficult in the country. The 2007 schedule
includes a full compliment of the top CAA
teams, as well as a very difficult non-conference
slate that includes conference favorites in
Penn and Lehigh. Maryland is the "money
game".
- Northeastern: The Huskies
continue to have one of the A-10's most-challenging
schedules; last season they were rated #2,
and #1 the in 2005. In 2007, ironically it
is the weak IA opponent in Northwestern that
keeps this from being the most difficult schedule
in the former A-10. Cal-Davis and Northwestern
St. are excellent OOC games; with one expected
to be a post-season contender and the other
look in to get back to be playing for Thanksgiving.
- Rhode Island: This is my
favorite schedule from the CAA. A balanced
conference slate, with challenging (yet achievable)
non-conference slate. Even Army is an obtainable
FBS goal. In conference, UMass and JMU are
at home, with UD and UNH being away games
...while the FBS non-conference opponents
are at Brown & home for what should be
a much-improved Fordham.
- Massachusetts: The Minutemen
do not have to face the Dukes or Hens in 2007,
which could again come back to haunt the conference
in November. However, Holy-Cross and Colgate
do not prove to be as good as advertised,
it will be the conference slate that will
put UMass into the play-off. You have to like
that in-state "cash cow" with BC.
- Richmond: Most of the
Spiders potent offense returns in 2007 &
with this schedule, the rest of the CAA better
pay attention. OOC tilts against Bucknell
and Stoneybrook are not overly difficult,
and one decent season from Vandy does not
a BCS power make.
- James Madison: As with
the Spider, JMU does not have a high-powered
schedule & will be a team that should
be playing in December.
- Hofstra: The Flying Dutchmen
have a very deceiving schedule for 2007. Even
though UNH, UMass, and Furman are at home
...they are still UNH, UMass, and Furman.
Most of the weakness in this schedule comes
from mtaches with Albany and Stony Brook.
- New Hampshire:A first
rate opener against JMU will dictate the Cats
entire season. A IA/FBS win is not out of
the question here in week 3.
- Towson St.:The Tigers
began the summer as a "sleeper",
but now people are talking. This is a good
schedule, and all though the OOC portion is
weak, both JMU and UMass are "road tilts".
- Maine: The Black Bears
schedule is very well balanced, and light
in the non-conference FCS. UConn is a very
powerful club
- Delaware: I think this
is the 3rd straight year that the Hens have
had the weakest schedule in the A-10/CAA.
I think it is time to take advantage of it.
Let's see here ...the traditional powers of
UD, YSU, UNI, Montana, Bethune-Cookman, and
App State all have the weakest schedules in
their respective conferences ...well now there
is a topic for conversation. Is it the fact
that these teams are usually ranked high &
on other schedules ...or is it the fact that
their schedules are weak that their records
are so good?
