Pete's 2007 Gateway Pre-Season Schedule Previews
  1. Indiana St.: Once again, Head coach Lou West will take his trees into one of the nations most difficult schedules in 2006. Certainly when a team is predicted at the bottom of a conference, the schedule strength is going to be high. In addition, there are two very tough non-conference games with Eastern Illinois and the Big-10's Indiana.
  2. Illinois State: Illinois State returns the bulk of a powerful team in 2007, and as it was in 2006, the Redbirds will to get through a very difficult schedule; if they plan on seeing the post season. The first two games are light with Drake and Murray St. at home. From then on it is all heavy, beginning with rival Eastern Illinois in a rematch of last year's play-off game. Then a $$ trip to IA Missouri takes ILS into Gateway action, with a road trip to preseason top-10 NDSU being non-conference for the last time. Conference action is evenly split.
  3. Western Illinois: It seems as though the I-AA/FCS nation has forgotten about WIU ...a post-season regular with a semi-final appearance just a couple of years ago. This is just what the Leathernecks are hoping for in 2007, as they look to climb back to the top of the Gateway Football Conference. An incredibly difficult non-GFC schedule includes both xDSU's, Stephen F. Austin, a DII, and a date at Champaign to take on the Fighting Illini.

  4. Missouri State: Head Coach Terry Allen returned to the GFC with much hype in 2006. However, in 2007, he looks to let his Bears "do the talking". Avery challenging slate is on tap with last year's OVC champ Tennessee-Martin, and the Big-12's Kansas State highlighting the non-Gateway portion.

  5. Southern Illinois: If the Saluki defense can slow down IA rival Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois will look to return to the post-season in 2007. In the final week, there will be a huge game at Hampton to take on the Pirates in what many a saying is another post-season preview.

  6. Youngstown State: The Penguins have lost much from the 2006 club, including Pete's Offensive POY, and now Redskin TB , Marcus Mason and the other 3 of what coach Heacock called "my 4 son's" from last year's backfield; with Gibson, Ison, and Cayson joining Mason in graduating. The Penguin's 2007 non-GFC slate is light, bolstered by a opener against former YSU head-coach JimTressel at the horse$hoe in Columbus. However, the real test will come against SDSU in week-2. The greatest issue with YSU's conference slate is that they travel to both SIU and UNI, losses to both is what kept them out of the play-off in 2005's 8-3 campaign.

  7. Northern Iowa: Last year, the Panthers took a light OOC schedule & blew it with a loss to DII (now I-aa/FCS transitional) North Dakota. This year, Minnesota State-Manko should not prove to be as challenging. In the conference slate, UNI will host both YSU and SIU in the Dome this year. This is why many say that UNI will win the GFC in 2007.
